Ask AideAI What Someone Wrote in Slack

The useful message is almost never in the assignment portal.

It is in Slack. A lab partner named a file. A TA changed the deadline in a thread you muted. Someone asked you to "just check what Jevgeni wrote the other day." You know the conversation exists. You do not want to hunt the sidebar, fat-finger search, and land in the wrong DM.

If Slack is already running on your Mac, AideAI can jump to that person or channel and recap what is on screen. You approve Slack once. You confirm the jump. When the assistant is done, AideAI comes back so the answer is in chat — not trapped under the Slack window.

This is Computer Use, not a Slack API integration and not Slack-in-a-browser. The longer product story is Use the Mac Apps You Already Have Open.

The search box is the wrong tool for "what did they say?"

Slack search is good at keywords. Students are good at names.

You remember who, not the exact string. Search then "helpfully" scopes to the chat you already had open, so you recap the wrong person with great confidence. Or you jump into the website because the desktop app did not steal focus, and you are suddenly in a logged-out workspace.

The job is simpler than search:

  1. Open the conversation with this person (or this channel).
  2. Read what is actually visible.
  3. Tell me, in AideAI, what I asked.

That is Jump, then a snapshot, then an answer. Not a tour of the sidebar.

What you need before you ask

Keep this boring. If any row is missing, the assistant should not improvise in a browser.

  • AideAI installed from the direct Mac download, not the App Store.
  • Computer Use enabled in Apps.
  • Slack already running. Computer Use does not replace "please open Slack for me" as a hunt through the web.
  • Slack added to Computer Use, with Write on if you want it to jump. Read-only is not enough to switch conversations.
  • You are willing to click Allow on a confirmation that names the person or channel in plain language — not a bundle ID.

What to type in chat

Name the person the way you would tell a roommate.

Look in Slack at what @Jevgeni wrote to me the other day.

or:

Open the #lab-group channel in Slack and recap the last messages about the demo.

Use @ for people and # for channels when you can. If you only say a first name, AideAI still treats it as a person jump, not as "search my current DM."

Do not ask it to click around the left sidebar as a substitute. Do not send it to slack.com while desktop Slack is the approved app. If a jump lands on Slack search or the wrong thread, ask it to jump again with the clearer name — then snapshot. The assistant should not "make do" in Chrome.

What you should see

After you send the message:

  1. A confirmation: AideAI wants to open that conversation in Slack.
  2. Slack comes forward. Jump opens, the name is typed, Return confirms.
  3. AideAI looks at the visible thread (not your entire sidebar history).
  4. AideAI comes back to the front with a recap you can actually read.

If Slack stays on top and the answer is hiding, that is a bug we already treated as a product requirement: the chat turn should restore AideAI. If it does not, switch back once and tell us — but you should not have to babysit every recap.

You may still need to skim the thread yourself if the useful bit is older than what is on screen. Computer Use reads the window in front of you. It is not a silent export of your entire Slack workspace.

What this is not

It is not "AideAI logged into Slack as you on the web." Browser Automation can open pages in AideAI's own browser. That is the wrong place for a workspace that already lives in the desktop app. For the split, read Computer Use or Browser Automation?.

It is not a replacement for Slack's own search when you truly need a keyword across months of history. Jump is for this person, this channel, now.

It is not on in the App Store build. If Computer Use is missing, you are on the wrong binary.

A small habit that saves the evening

Approve Slack. Leave every other app off until you need it. Ask for one name. Read the recap in AideAI. If you also need the PDF they mentioned, add Finder the same way — still one app at a time.

When you want the assistant in a multi-agent layout while this runs, keep the thread in Agent Desk. Computer Use is the permission to touch Slack. Agent Desk is where you keep the conversation.
